VOC Port is an artificial deep sea harbour formed with rouble mound type parallel break waters projecting into the sea about 4 kms, Length of North break water is 4098.66 m and south break water 3873.37 m with a width between breakwaters of 1275 mtrs.

Pilot available for 24 hrs except during the shift change over time. however, berthing/unberthing of vessels from/to deep draft berths (draft more than 9.3 meters) are carried out only during calm weather.

AIR: Nearest international airport is THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (TRIVANDRUM -TRV) situated about 270 kilo meters away from Tuticorin. If booked via TRV airport drop can be arranged. It takes about 5-6 hrs by road from/to TUTICORIN/TRIVANDRUM.
Another Nearest Intl airport is CHENNAI (MAA) about 600 kilo meters away from Tuticorin. There are many flights being operated from CHENNAI to nearest domestic/ Intl airport MADURAI (IXM) about 140 kilo meters away from Tuticorin. By road it takes about 2 hrs from TUTICORIN (TCR) to Madurai. There are also few Intl flights being operated directly to/from Madurai.
There are also few flights daily being operated from CHENNAI (MAA) to TUTICORIN (TCR)/back and Tuticorin Domestic Airport which is situated about 23KM away from Tuticorin Harbour

NE Monsoon may be active in East Coast during October to February during which sometimes port operations s are affected. However, heavy rain experienced at Tuticorin only on rare occasions. Max spell occurs during the month of October/November.
Except on port closed/festival holidays Port work 24 hrs a day/7 days. During festival holidays port/stevedores work on overtime basis. As the cargo normally being discharged on 'FIOS" by the appointed stevedores by cargo receivers, working of overtime is subject to agreement of stevedores.

Maximum permissible draft @ 14.2 meters - Such vessels shall be handled only during day light hours and utilizing the tide of at least 0.65 meters and in rising tide only.

Coal Jetty 1 & 2 are dedicated berths for vessels discharging coal consigned to TTPS (TuticorinThermal Power Station) & TNEB
Vessels arriving with thermal coal consigned to TTPS/TNEB are berthed at dedicated berths COAL JETTY 1 & 2 discharging cargo using ship's cranes where restrictions are as follows :-

No shore crane facilities available at above berths.
At dedicated Coal Jetty 1 & 2 average discharge rate of 12000 -15000 MT/ Day could be achieved basis average 4/5 gangs /shift basis cargo discharge using ship's crane and grabs. ** Berth No. 1 to 6 & 9 is allotted for all types of vessels including break-bulk, bulk and tankers. However, SB (shallow berth is dedicated for coast guard vessels only and for VCM tankers.
All bulk cargoes are handled at berth no. VOC3 , 4, 2, 5, 6 & 9.
As per recent port circular, any bulk cargo vessels intent to berth at No-9 should undertake to deploy 2x120 harbour mobile cranes, If the private mobile cranes are engaged approx 24000/28000 metric Tonnes per day could be achieved (using 2 x 120 Metric Ton x 3 shifts) subject to cargo receivers make suitable arrangements for clearance of hook points/speedy evacuation of cargo from wharf. Crane hire charges extra which normally being undertaken by cargo receivers.
In view of the conveyor at berth no. 9 for the coal handling, the outreach of ship's cranes may not be sufficient to discharge the cargo other than coal using ship's cranes and dumping at wharf for subsequent evacuation. Therefore unless it is feasible to discharge cargo through conveyor and move to storage yard and consignee’s readiness in all respects basis above, port may not allot berth no.9 for discharging bulk cargo other than coal at berth no.9. In case the cargo to be discharged by dumping at wharf, port may insist deployment of shore cranes and cargo receivers/ stevedores should give undertaking to port that the shore cranes will be deployed basis which only port will be considering allotment of berth no.9
NCB 1 is dedicated berth for coal handling account NLC
NCB 2 being operated by Private Company Tuticorin Coal Terminal (presently (as on 09/05/19) non-operational.
Maximum permissible draft shown above is all seasons as declared by port.
In view of the recently installed conveyor /hoppers at berth no. 9 for discharging coal, outreach of ship's cranes may not be sufficient to handle cargoes other than coal at berth no. 9 . Therefore if any vessels other than coal discharge is allotted at berth no. 9, port will be insisting for deployment of shore cranes.

At berth no. 1,2,3,4,5,6 usually cargo being handled using ship's cranes/ grabs. At berth no.3/4 bulk cargo also may be discharged using 3 x 20' grab fitted shore cranes. At berth no.9 coal discharged using ship's crane/grabs to conveyor.
