Its an open type harbour protected by a breakwater and a mole built from the outer end of the breakwater and running parallel to the quay.
The large roadstead to the West and the North-West of the Harbour anchorage in stream for more than 20 ships during th eights months fair season ( October to May) and 8 ships can be accommodated inside the break water throughout the year.

Pilotage is compulsory for Inward, Outward movements of ships & movements between berths/mooring /WISL and within the Harbour.Pilotage service is provided round the clock with 1 day’s prior advice. However, Night Navigation during the Monsoon from 21st May to 15th Sept. every year depends on weather, same subject weather permits. Pilot Bookings and ship’s movements are planned in the Berthing meetings at 1000 hrs every day for the programme of the next day.

ROAD : Mormugao-Goa Port is connected through road with the rest of the country through two national Highways NH-17 and NH-4A
RAIL : The broad gauge railway system of Port serves the general cargo berths. Port railway System is connected to South Western Railway through which it is also linked to the Konkan railway.
AIR : The only Airport at is Goa International Airport (Dabolim-Goa airport), situated at about 8-9 KM from Mormugao Port having domestic air service as above. International Flights are only chartered flights that are mainly for foreign Tourists. Another International airport under constructions: Goa International Airport at MOPA-Goa.
